Get Ready
Pastor Mark Carrillo
“A Song of Ascents. Of David. I was glad when they said to me, “Let us go to the house of the LORD!”” (Psalms 122:1, ESV)
glad = brighten up, rejoice, be overjoyed;
Pilgrimage — the feasts that required attendance meant people had to journey. Lots of preparation for both the priests and the pilgrims
GOD HAS A HABIT OF SHOWING UP WHEN ALL THE PIECES ARE IN PLACE
Jesus came in the “fullness of time”
“But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law,” (Galatians 4:4, ESV)
“as a plan for the fullness of time, to unite all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth.” (Ephesians 1:10, ESV)
God prepared the Garden then formed mankind.
Patterns: Old Testament Types and Shadows
Make it according to the Pattern! (Ref. Exodus 29:9,40; Numbers 8:4; Acts 7:44; Hebrews 8:5)
“And let them make me a sanctuary, that I may dwell in their midst. Exactly as I show you concerning the pattern of the tabernacle, and of all its furniture, so you shall make
it.” (Exodus 25:8-9, ESV)
“It shall be made, with all these utensils, out of a talent of pure gold. And see that you make them after the pattern for them, which is being shown you on the mountain.” (Exodus 25:39-40, ESV)
“And this was the workmanship of the lampstand, hammered work of gold. From its base to its flowers, it was hammered work; according to the pattern that the LORD had shown Moses, so he made the lampstand.” (Numbers 8:4, ESV)
“”Our fathers had the tent of witness in the wilderness, just as he who spoke to Moses directed him to make it, according to the pattern that he had seen.” (Acts 7:44, ESV)
“They serve a copy and shadow of the heavenly things. For when Moses was about to erect the tent, he was instructed by God, saying, “See that you make everything according to the pattern that was shown you on the mountain.”” (Hebrews 8:5, ESV)
God was specific about the materials, the plan and who was to do the work.
THE TABERNACLE
“And he erected the court around the tabernacle and the altar, and set up the screen of the gate of the court. So Moses finished the work.” (Exodus 40:33, ESV)
“Then the cloud covered the tent of meeting, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle. And Moses was not able to enter the tent of meeting because the cloud settled on it, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle.” (Exodus 40:34-35, ESV)
The work gets finished, the Tabernacle is put up and Bam! God moves in!
Every part of the design and construction was important to God.
“For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body— Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and all were made to drink of one Spirit.” (1 Corinthians 12:12-13, ESV)
“But as it is, God arranged the members in the body, each one of them, as he chose.” (1 Corinthians 12:18, ESV)
Our individual parts and assembling are important to God’s plan for heaven invading earth.
THE TEMPLE
When the Ark of the Covenant was in place and the poles used to transport it were removed . . .
“And when the priests came out of the Holy Place, a cloud filled the house of the LORD, so that the priests could not stand to minister because of the cloud, for the glory of the LORD filled the house of the LORD.” (1 Kings 8:10-11, ESV)
Once the celebrations were complete, notice how the participants went home:
“On the twenty-third day of the seventh month he sent the people away to their homes, joyful and glad of heart for the prosperity that the LORD had granted to David and to Solomon and to Israel his people.” (2 Chronicles 7:10, ESV)
This took place on the last day of the Feast of Tabernacles
This feast was unique in that Gentiles were invited to come to Jerusalem to worship
The significance was to remember God’s provision in the Wilderness and look forward to the Messianic Age when all nations would flow into the Jerusalem to worship the Lord.
Centuries later Jesus chose the last day of Tabernacles to give this invitation:
“On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.'”” (John 7:37-38, ESV)
He used day to make an invitation to any who would believe to come to Him.
DAY OF PENTECOST
The types and shadows of the Old Testament patterns find their fulfillment in Jesus and the Church.
The fulness of time came for the Body of Christ, the Church, to be birthed.
“When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.” (Acts 2:1-4, ESV)
Unexpected Results of Being Filled
“And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. And awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signswere being done through the apostles. And all who believed were together and had all things in common. And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need. And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.” (Acts 2:42-47, ESV)
While there are gifts of the Spirit and varieties of administrations that are supernatural, many of the evidences of Spirit-filled life looked fairly mundane:
Devoted = attend constantly — they were in the Word consistently, the were making relationship a priority, they persevered in prayer, church attendance (temple) was consistent, they didn’t just fellowship at church but “house to house.”
Gladness and Generosity were way beyond the norm.
Another evidence of all the above was that “the Lord added to their number day by day.” Enjoying church and each other doesn’t seem like much of an evangelism plan, but when people are madly in love with Jesus and each other it draws masses.
I was glad when they said to me, “Let’s go to church!
Attraction of Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness . . .
“For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking but of righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.” (Romans 14:17, ESV)
“Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit.” (Psalms 51:12, ESV)
TPT — “Let my passion for life be restored, tasting joy in every breakthrough you bring to me. Hold me close to you with a willing spirit that obeys whatever you say.”
