“Now it came to pass, as He was praying in a certain place,
when He ceased, that one of His disciples said to Him,
‘Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.’ – Luke 11:1 NKJV
“So He said to them, ‘When you pray, say:
Our Father who art in Heaven,
Hallowed be thy Name. – Step 1: Adoration
Thy kingdom come. – Step 2: Consecration
Thy will be done
On earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread. – Step 3: Supplication
And forgive us our sins, – Step 4: Intercession
For we also forgive every one that is indebted to us.
And lead us not into temptation, – Step 5: Protection
but deliver us from evil.’”
“And it came to pass, that as He was praying in a certain place,
when He ceased, one of His disciples said unto Him,
‘Lord, teach us to pray as John also taught his disciples.’” – Luke 11:1 (NKJV)
Who is present in this conversation?
Which one is speaking while the other eleven are listening?
While Jesus was praying, what were the twelve disciples talking about?
How did John teach them to pray?
And their scribes and the Pharisees complained against His disciples, saying, ‘Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?’” – Luke 5:30 NKJV
And make prayers – “make” (poieo) “to be the author of”
“This was in sharp contrast to the way the religious order of the day prayed as they recited prayers in rote as given by God through their forefathers.
What is happening now is that John was doing something new that had been introduced at the time of the birth of Jesus. Which was an openness for a personal relationship between man and his Creator.”
“This is a shift from the rote prayers of the temple and an invitation is given to enter into a personal prayer relationship with the Father, with Abba.”
‘Lord, teach us to pray
as John also taught his disciples.’” – Luke 11:1 NKJV
Why
For the Relationship with the Father.
Not to compare yourselves to others –
Not to appease the religious-
When
Jesus knew the Scriptures and was taught to pray three times a day.
“Evening and morning and at noon
I will pray, and cry aloud,
And He shall hear my voice.” – Psalm 55:17 (NKJV)
“Again He went away and prayed, and spoke the same words.” – Mark 14:39 (NKJV)
“Now it came to pass in those days that He went out to the mount to pray,
And continued all night in prayer to God.” – Luke 6:12 (NKJV)
“And when you pray…But you, when you pray…And when you pray…” – Matthew 6:5-7 (NKJV)
Where
“But, when you pray, go into your room and when you have shut your door, pray…” – Matthew 6:5-7
Pray in secret, a quiet place. Away from distractions.
Pray in solitude, your car.
Jesus did teach His disciples to pray, and we as His disciples today from the Scriptures have been taught by Jesus to pray from the heart He taught a “model.”
“So He said to them, ‘When you pray, say:
Our Father who art in Heaven,
Hallowed be thy Name. – Step 1: Adoration
Thy kingdom come. – Step 2: Consecration
Thy will be done
On earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread. – Step 3: Supplication
And forgive us our sins, – Step 4: Intercession
For we also forgive every one that is indebted to us.
And lead us not into temptation, – Step 5: Protection
but deliver us from evil.’”
