Obedience Over Outcome

Tyler McKinney

Obedience is our responsibility the Lord controls the outcome.

Matthew 14:27-31

But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid.” 28 And Peter answered him, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” 29 He said, “Come.” So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus. 30 But when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, “Lord, save me.” 31 Jesus immediately reached out his hand and took hold of him, saying to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?”

2nd guessing leads to sinking.

  • This was a fear based reaction
  • Don’t look at your circumstances, look to the one who leads you through them.

We can sink ourselves in our circumstances, faults, and sins.

Galatians 5:1

“For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.”

Galatians 5:13

13 “Beloved ones, God has called us to live a life of freedom in the Holy Spirit. But don’t view this wonderful freedom as an opportunity to set up a base of operations in the natural realm. Freedom means that we become so completely free of self-indulgence that we become servants of one another, expressing love in all we do.”

We are free to walk in freedom carrying freedom everywhere we go, not to submit or obey the things that enslaved us. (Israel Exodus viewpoint “Let’s go back.”)

Obedience is our responsibility

Outcome is God’s responsibility

When we take outcome into our own hands obedience shifts from the will of the Father to the will of self.

Jonah was the son of Amittai

Amittai – Truth of the Lord

Jonah was a son of the truth of the Lord, he was raised to understand the Lords truth over his own.

Jonah was running out of hate for the Assyrians.

Jonah 3:2-5, 10

“Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and call out against it the message that I tell you.” So Jonah arose and went to Nineveh, according to the word of the Lord. Now Nineveh was an exceedingly great city, three days’ journey in breadth. Jonah began to go into the city, going a day’s journey. And he called out, “Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown!” And the people of Nineveh believed God. They called for a fast and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them to the least of them.

10 When God saw what they did, how they turned from their evil way, God relented of the disaster that he had said he would do to them, and he did not do it.

Nineveh heard the word of the Lord, walked in obedience and changed their outcome.

  • The outcome they were headed for was self destruction.
  • The outcome God wanted for them was repentance and grace.

Obedience is our responsibility

Outcome is God’s responsibility

John 14:15 (ESV & TPT)

15 “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.”

15 “Loving me empowers you to obey my commands.”

Obedience is fueled by love.

We don’t just obey to obey, we walk in obedience because we love.
