ACT I – THE MADMAN
“The thief comes only to steal and to kill and to destroy…” – John 10:10 ESV
There are two equal and opposite errors into which our race can fall about the devils. One is to disbelieve in their existence. The other is to believe, and to feel an excessive and unhealthy interest in them. They themselves are equally pleased by both errors, and hail a materialist or magician with the same delight. – C.S. Lewis
But Jesus said, “No, go home to your family, and tell them everything the Lord has done for you and how merciful he has been.” – Mark 5:19 NLT
ACT II – A DESPERATE DAD
Jesus got into the boat again and went back to the other side of the lake, where a large crowd gathered around him on the shore. – Mark 5:21 ESV
ACT III – THE RISK OF FAITH
He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be free from your sickness.” – Mark 5:34 ESV
ACT IV – A COSTLY INTERRUPTION
“…Do not fear, only believe.” – Mark 5:36 ESV
It is as if He is saying: “Despite all appearances I am neither distracted nor disinterested in your need. I work in My time, not others’ time. I will not be hurried or dictated to. Believe and watch what I do.” – Daniel Akin
ACT V – THE PREVIEW
“This might raise the question of why did Jesus apparently only raise Jairus’ daughter, the widow’s son in Luke 7, and Lazarus in John 11? There must have been plenty of other people Jesus encountered who had just lost someone to death. Why them and not others? Or why them and not me? This question misses the whole point of the larger story that Mark is telling us. Just as Jesus wasn’t coming to be a one man liberation movement in the traditional revolutionary sense, so he wasn’t coming to be a one man emergency medical center. He is indeed starting a revolution and he is indeed bringing God’s healing power but his aim went deeper: these were signs of the real revolution, the real healing that God was to accomplish through his death and resurrection. Signs are important, but they aren’t the destination.” – NT Wright
