He Is – The Seven “I Am” Statements of Jesus

Pastor Mark Carillo

Part 5 – I Am the Way, Truth and Life / I Am the Resurrection and Life

“then the LORD God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature.” (Genesis 2:7, ESV)

“Then he said to me, “Prophesy over these bones, and say to them, O dry bones, hear the word of the LORD. Thus says the Lord GOD to these bones: Behold, I will cause breath to enter you, and you shall live.” (Ezekiel 37:4-5, ESV)

“And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit.” (John 20:22, ESV)

SIN and DEATH were addressed at the Cross

“For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures,” (1 Corinthians 15:3-4, ESV)

We don’t have to spend our lives looking for life
“Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father

except through me.” (John 14:6, ESV)

I AM = God
“Comes to the Father” not “Goes to the Father” (Supported by context)

If He can come back from the dead, you can come back from anything you face!

Resurrection — Power over Death

“But when Jesus heard it he said, “This illness does not lead to death. It is for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it.”” (John 11:4, ESV)

He sees things through a completely different paradigm than most people do.

“After saying these things, he said to them, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I go to awaken him.”” (John 11:11, ESV)

When you hold the keys to death, hell and the grave, death is only temporary.

“Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong
slavery.” (Hebrews 2:14-15, ESV)

“Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. So, when he heard that Lazarus was ill, he stayed two days longer in the place where he was.” (John 11:5-6, ESV)

“Then Jesus told them plainly, “Lazarus has died, and for your sake I am glad that I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him.”” (John 11:14-15, ESV)

“Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live,” (John 11:25, ESV)

John’s Reason for Writing

“Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.” (John 20:30-31, ESV)

The conclusion that the resurrection points us to isn’t life after death, but that Jesus is the Messiah.

Jesus doesn’t always do what He’s expected to do, when He’s expected to do it.

“Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.” (John 11:21, ESV)

If you had only been here . . . If you were just on time . . .

“But even now I know that whatever you ask from God, God will give you.”” (John 11:22, ESV) The verb translated “ask” here is used of an inferior asking something from a superior.

“Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.” Martha said to him, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day.”” (John 11:23-24, ESV)

Jesus was talking about RIGHT NOW! In the present; TODAY!

He not only gives bread – He is the Bread of Life (6:27)
He not only raises the dead, He is the Resurrection and the Life (5:21, 25f)

The New Creation has begun. The Kingdom has arrived. Jesus is Lord!

“She said to him, “Yes, Lord; I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who is coming into the world.”” (John 11:27, ESV)
